Structural Topology Optimization using Hybrid Cellular Automata

John E Renaud and Andrés Tovar, University of Notre Dame, USA John E. Renaud is a professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. His experience includes five years as a manufacturing systems design engineer with the Eastman Kodak Company. He is a past chair of the ASME Design Automation Technical Committee and the AIAA Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Technical Committee, and is an ASME fellow and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. His research interests include large-scale numerical optimization, computational biomechanics, simulation- based design under uncertainty, shape optimization in orthopaedics, computational biomechanics, parallel computing in numerical optimization and multifunctional materials. Andrés Tovar is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering and co-director of the Design Automation Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame. He is also an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at the National University of Colombia. As a graduate student at Notre Dame, while studying the functional adaptation process in bones, Prof. Tovar proposed and developed a structural optimization algorithm known as the hybrid cellular automaton (HCA) method that has since been applied to the design of crashworthy structures for Honda R&D Americas, as well as blast mitigating structures and materials for the U.S. Army. His main research areas include bone remodeling and design optimization of mechanical components and building structures.
